The new species has the scientific name Drepanosticta emtrai Dow, Kompier & Phan, 2018, the name of the species is given in Vietnamese, "younger brother" to refer to the "late birth" of this species compared with a species very close to it is Drepanosticta hongkongensis Wilson, 1997. Species D. emtrai is similar to other species in the family Platystictidae. The new species has the scientific name Drepanosticta emtrai Dow, Kompier & Phan, 2018, the name given to the species.
